Preparation. ( Before your pet is lost )
Nobody wants to lose their beloved pet. Inspite of all your precautions and care, it still can happen. In addition to escapes, pets can be stolen. A little preparation can speed the recovery of your pet, if it is lost.
-
Have your pet wear a collar with an identifying tag.
Be sure your pet wears its collar all the time. Most collars are washable so there is no need to remove it when washing your pet.
-
Have your pet tattooed.
Tattoos are usually placed in the ear or on the underside of one of the rear legs. When done by a qualified individual, your pet will feel only a slight tingling sensation. If your pet is tattooed, keep the tattoo free of hair so that humane officers and volunteers can easily locate the tattoo. Have your pet's tattoo registered with one of the national pet tattoo registries. These registries feature 800 numbers and are known by most humane organizations. One fringe benefit for a tattooed pet, most humane organizations will not allow tattooed pets to be sold for research purposes.
-
Get your pet a microchip.
Microchips are inserted under the skin of pet by a qualified installer. Although the microchip is permanent, microchip readers are not widely available.
-
Have a recent photograph of your pet.
Its a handy way for you and others to identify your pet. Its also great way to show off your pet when you get together with your friends.
