Borzoi and Snakes

Useful Tips on Dealing with Snakes
As instinctive hunters, Borzoi are attracted to the movement of a snake.

Don't let your Borzoi approach snakes whether they are venomous or non-venomous!

Most snakes will travel on if you just leave them alone.

If you are unsure of the type of snake and it does not leave your property, then you should call animal regulation to help with removal. Continue to observe the snake until the animal regulation official arrives.

Avoid letting animals kill snakes, especially King Snakes and Gopher Snakes. These snakes are an important natural controls of vermin ( rats and mice ) as well as venomous snakes.
First Aid for Snake Bites to Your Borzoi

Move your Borzoi away from the snake to prevent more bites.

DO NOT attempt to capture or restrain the snake.

Wash the wound as soon as possible.

Quiet your Borzoi, to slow down blood circulation.

Transport the animal to a Veterinary Facility IMMEDIATELY.
Venomous snake bites will usually result in swelling about the bite.
DO NOT WAIT to see if the wound swells.
Prompt Veterinary attention may be necessary to avert death.

DO NOT use ice.

DO NOT cut the wound.

NO Tourniquets!
Precautions when Hiking with your Borzoi

NEVER hike alone. A companion (NOT an animal) can render aid, help transport you, or go for help.

Avoid brush and over-grown areas where you can not see the ground easily.

Be careful around flat rocky surfaces. Snakes often sun bathe and difficult to distinguish from the rocks.

Be careful where you place your hands and feet, and where you sit. Snakes like to hide in hard to see places.
