The Dangers of Summer Heat

Warm weather, especially the summer heat, are times to monitor your Borzoi's condition more closely. Bred originally for the cooler climate of Northern Russia, they are at greater risk of heat stress or stroke in warmer climates. High himidity or lack of ventalation compound the problems of warm weather. A Borzoi's normal body temperature is at least 3 degrees higher than yours. Their natural cooling ability is also more limited -- they perspire only with their tougue and pads on their feet. Young puppies and older dogs are at even greater risk because of their age.

DON'T LEAVE YOUR BORZOI UNATTENDED IN YOUR VEHICLE

With its many windows, the inside of your car is like a greenhouse.

Even if the weather is mildly warm . . .
Even if you leave the windows slightly open . . .
Even in the shade,

the temperature can reach 160 degrees within a matter of minutes. If left in a parked car for as little as 5 minutes he can suffer heat stroke, brain damage, convulsions, and even death.

First Aid for Heat Stress

If you see signs of heat stress

Excessive panting
Loss of attention or consciousness, weakness, or fainting
Dialated pupils
Wobbly legs or inability to stand normally

Begin first aid immediately

Move dog to cool well ventalated area.
Immediately apply cold packs between the rear legs, and / or hose the dog down.
Take him to a veterinarian as fast as possible.

Preventing Heat Stress

Common sense tips to help your Borzoi avoid heat stress include :

Ensure adequate natural or other ventalation.
Provide for cool shady resting areas all day.
Provide ample cool water for drinking.
If possible, keep your Borzoi indoors and air conditioned during the extremely hot parts of the day.
In low humidity areas, consider using a misting device reduce temperatures by natural evaporation.
