Using an Elizabethean Collar

The elizabethean collar is a cone shaped device ( usually plastic ) designed to prevent self inflicted injury to a dog. Slipped over the head, it helps prevent chewing on incisions, casts and bandages. It also helps prevent scratching head injuries. The borzoi's combination of a powerful neck with a sleek head creates the difficulties in keeping the collar on.

Elizabethean Collar

We generally use about 30 inches of 2 inch gauze tape to attach the collar to a borzoi.

First thread the tape through all of the attachment rings so equal lengths of tape hang out of the first and last rings.
After placing the cone on the borzoi's head, we wrap and tie the tape about the dog's neck. The tape should be tied snugly, but you should also be able to slip a finger between the dogs neck and the tape easily.
We like to use a shoe lace knot to secure the tape. With this knot we can remove the collar quickly and easily.
